My Top 10 Wishlist Items

If your family is anything like mine they’re already asking you for your holiday wish list. Every year the majority of the things on my wishlist are notions and supplies for my sewing room. Because like many quilters I like to save my money for buying fabric and put off buying the supplies until it’s a must have.

So diving in, here are my favorite items I have in my sewing room and ones I’m adding to my wish list this year!

I won these sheers about two years ago in a giveaway. They were my absolute favorite scissors I’ve ever owned and I lost them. I took them on a sewing trip and haven’t seen them since. They are a must replace for me!

I ask for one of these cones every Christmas. I’m not a quilter who matches all of their threads to their project when piecing. I piece just about everything with Aurifil 50 wt white thread. This will last me at least 6 months. Using this cone does require using a thread cone stand, but I used to just place it inside a mug next to my machine and that works too. People thought I was silly when I took my mugs to workshops, but once I explained why they changed their tunes and thought I was a genius.

This year I have a goal to get a little more organized and intentional in my sewing work. One of the ways I’m doing this is with the Plan to Quilt Planner by Eva Blake’s Makery. I’ve recently got my planner and it’s making it fun and easy to plan out my next patterns I’m planning to release in 2022.

If you want to join me on this mission to more organized sewing you can use my discount code LOVESEWMODERN to save 10% off your order.

One of the most important rules in quilting is accurately cutting out your fabric. The way I leveled up my cutting game was by slowly upgrading all of my rulers to the Quilters Select Rulers.

One of my quilting friends brought this ruler to a quilting retreat and told me to try it. It changed cutting for me! They don’t slip and slide over my fabric or take lots of pressure from my hand to keep it in place. I’ve upgraded almost every ruler in my studio now and I don’t regret it.

Make it stand out

My favorite 8 wt thread for hand quilting and big stitch binding is the Wonderfil Elganza thread. Last year Wonderfil and Alison Glass teamed up to create a stunning thread collection. It was number one on my wishlist last year and I’ve made a nice dent into all these stunning colors.

You could get a few balls for a fun stocking stuffer or select one of the boxed curated collections. I personally get a display for them in my sewing studio and they serve as both function and decoration. I love the color they add to my space and projects!

You know a seam ripper is worth it when you don’t cringe reaching for it for the 3rd time during a sewing project. During the pandemic I treated myself to this quilter’s set from Modern American Vintage. I use the seam ripper daily and the Hera marker whenever I’m handing quilting. These American handmade tools feel special and unique in my sewing room. Modern American Vintage has recently added clappers too, which I’m considering adding to my wishlist.

Number 7: The Bloc-Loc Ruler

I know I’ve already mentioned rulers, but this is my favorite ruler for half square triangles. I feel like the Bloc_Loc Ruler makes trimming HST so much faster and easier. They come in every size imaginable, but if you can only get one I’d recommend the 6 1/2” ruler. I find most patterns use either 4 1/2” - 6" 1/2” HST and the 6 1/2” ruler size will cover that whole range.

While we’re on the topic of HSTs I have to mention the Diagonal Seam Tape by Cluck Cluck Sew. Quilter’s confession, I don’t mark my HSTs, or Flying Geese. I use this tape and it has saved me hours of work. I keep this little guy in my travel sewing bag and offer it up to everyone to try when I’m out sewing with my friends.

Number 9: Kona Color Card OR your preferred solids brand

Last Christmas my husband got me the Kona color card and it has certainly gotten its use with the increase of shopping at quilt shops from home. I have a few other solids color cards too that I ordered this year. They’re useful when building a color story too. This year I hope to chop them all up and put them on a chalk board. I love an opportunity to create something that is both functional and decorative.

Number 10: Patterns!

Of course I would be thrilled if you asked for a pattern or two from me for a stocking stuffer. All of our patterns come in both PDF and Paper versions, which are perfect for wrapping.

But I’m also going to share with you the two patterns I’ve added to my wishlist for this year!

I always like to have an English Paper Piecing project in the works to take along with me everywhere I go. My favorite EPP designer is Brimfield Awakening. Their latest pattern, Sparkle, is at the top of my wishlist.

If Santa doesn’t bring it I will be getting it for myself. I can’t wait to stitch it up.

Each year I also like to ask for a pattern that will challenge me or teach me a new skill. This year I’m asking for Ottoman Rings Mini by Tighe Flanagan. He just got acrylic templates in to make cutting out this project a little easier and I am here for it.

This pattern uses partial seams, which I’ve never done before. I’m excited to give it a try.
